Black hat SEO – Black hat refers to a set of SEO techniques that only serve to please search engines without even considering people’s needs. These SEO tactics are underhanded ones; examples of these tactics are linked scheming and cloaking. Although black hat SEO is effective in the sense that results roll in quicker, once you are caught using these tactics, your website will be removed from Google’s search engine results pages.

Backlink – Also known as inbound link, backlink is the term used to refer to the link coming from another website to yours. Backlinks are important for SEO because search engines think of them as votes that your site receives. The more votes (links) that you get from relevant sites, the better your search rank will be.

Keyword – Also referred to as a search term, keywords are words and phrases that online users enter on the search field when querying a search engine.

Spiders – Also called crawlers, spiders are computer programs that search engines use to scan websites and collect their information.

White hat SEO – White hat SEO is a type of SEO that follows the rules of search engines. They give slow but steady results and they are more focused on pleasing online users rather than the search engines.

Gray hat SEO – SEO methods that can be classified as somewhere in between white hat and black hat SEO. However, most of these strategies are considered questionable. Gray hat SEO techniques, although they are thought to be legitimate, also violate search engine rules, so it’s better not to use them. Examples of this method are campaigns utilizing duplicate content.

PageRank – It is the term that Google uses to classify the authority of a site using a number system (0-10, which 10 being the highest number).

Hummingbird – An algorithm that Google started using since September 2013. It was designed to provide quicker and helpful results to online users while also accommodating conversational search queries.

Organic search result – Organic search result or natural listing is a type of search result that is not paid. Majority of online users give more attention to organic results rather than paid ads, which is why it is a preferable position to be ranked in.
